Decanter.com recently published an article about Georgian winemaking, making wine in Qvevri and the ancient traditions that have preserved in Georgia.

Qvevri wines from Georgia: A winemaking story and 12 wines to try

This article was published with this title. The author (Sylvia Wu) interestingly describes the tiny details of making Kvevari wine and finally offers a professional evaluation of 12 georgian Qvevri wines, where Mildiani Qvevri Khikhvi is the highest. Otskhanuri Sapere has a high score in the list too.

Mildiani Family Winery, Qvevri Bouquet Khikhvi, Kakheti, Georgia 2018

Grapey perfume on the nose, with citrus, blossom, orange jelly and apricot. Ripe and textured on the palate, with more quince jam, mango, apricot juice and a pinch of white spices, balanced by polished acidity and a touch of tannin. The finish is beautifully long with dried yellow fruits. Aged on skins for 6 months, this is a complex yet refined qvevri wine that's instantly enjoyable.

Mildiani Family Winery, Private Selection Otskhanuri Sapere Qvevri, Kakheti, Georgia 2018

A characterful red made using the indigenous Otskhanuri Sapere grape from a single vineyard in the Imereti region, Western Georgia. During fermentation, the wine spent 20 days on skins in qvevri, before a further 2 months of ageing without skin. Sour black and red cherry and a hint of smoky prune on the nose, ripe and juicy on the palate, with dried fruit sweetness, plum, blackcurrant and dark cherry juice. The tannins are robust, but structured and ripe, leading to dried tea and a touch of spices on the warm finish. Perfect for roast lamb.
